Nursery workers provide curriculum-related and play-based learning opportunities, support the development of social skills and provide care for children aged three to four years. They may also work with children in reception classes, support children’s transition to school and may help identify children who need extra help or who may be experiencing physical or emotional difficulties. It is possible to work in a nursery setting without qualifications; however the majority of local authorities and employers prefer qualified staff. Qualifications include Certificate in Childcare and Education, Level 2 in Early Years Care and Education, Diploma in Child Care and Education, Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education, Advanced Diploma in Child Care and Education and NVQ 4.
