General Expectations. A successful learning community requires its members to fulfill responsibilities to themselves and to others. It is our expectation to actively create and support a bias-free classroom. All students have a right to be heard, respected, and valued. We expect students and faculty to increase their awareness of socio-cultural privilege dynamics and how that may impact student learning and the classroom environment. It is expected that all participants in this program (faculty, students, and staff) will be socially responsible and enter into the program in a spirit of good will. This means, among other things, that: we will be on time and prepared for all parts of the program (lectures, workshops, laboratories, etc.); we will respect the uniqueness of others and be respectful of differences; we will consider the effects of our actions on others as well as ourselves (for example, failure to participate actively in program activities or study groups seriously undermines the effectiveness and morale of the community); and that should problems arise, we will deal directly with the parties involved with civility and tolerance, rather than simply complain to others. We also expect that all individuals respect one another and help to create an inclusive learning community. All students are expected to attend and participate in the parts of the program for which they are registered.
