Platform as a Service definition

Platform as a Service. (PaaS) means the capability provided to the consumer to deploy onto the cloud infrastructure consumer-created or -acquired applications created using programming languages and tools supported by the provider. This capability does not necessarily preclude the use of compatible programming languages, libraries, services and tools from other sources. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure, including network, servers, operating systems or storage, but has control over the deployed applications and possibly application hosting environment configurations.
Platform as a Service or “PaaS” means a category of cloud computing services in which a Provider provides a platform allowing customers to develop, run and manage cloud accessible software applications without the complexity of building and maintaining the infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching a cloud accessible application.

  • Cloud Service Provider (CSP): A company or institution that offers some component of cloud computing to other businesses or individual, typically Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS), as defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
