ASPECTS RELATING TO THE PROJECT Sample Clauses

ASPECTS RELATING TO THE PROJECT. 2.1 Background and state of art Please describe the origins of the project, potential experiences drawn from and additionality in relation to previous projects and the state of the art in relation to the project's objectives and goals. LECs can be seen as a small distribution system with a very high penetration of distributed generation, battery storage, e-mobility, community storage systems, as well as disruptive technological trends like blockchain or local markets. Up to now, there are no energy system planning tools available, which allow LEC planners to optimize local energy systems by considering sector coupling and the temporal dynamic of such systems. Existing modelling tools are available but mainly for national energy systems (e.g. MARKAL or TIMES) and only for the use of research institutes or highly specialized consultants. Within CLUE, new tools will be developed or the functionalities of existing tools will be extended. Apart from tool development, all cells engage in innovation activities with regards to the technologies employed for flexibility and their integration. In Germany, a LowEx heating & cooling system at ambient temperature levels is installed in Shamrock Park district. LowEx systems are long under development (IEA Annex 37) but there are only pilots realized. A lack of standardization and operational problems (temperature islands, hydraulic problems due to bidirectional flows) prevail. CLUE will raise standardization and replicability via the tool development and will tackle optimization problems in operation. CLUE will also examine how the thermal storage capacity of the system can be used for flexibility services to the urban energy system. The Scottish demo site will implement and validate the so-called web of cells architecture. It allows balancing of the power grid through communication and interfacing between local cells of minimal complexity to alleviate local problems within each cell. To date, this approach has only been investigated in a laboratory environment. SGSs world leading DERMS software will be utilized to provide state of the art control over the web of cells architecture to be developed within the Levenmouth area. A recent pre-study has shown large potentials for flexibility in society currently underused. The Swedish work package aims to verify this theoretical potential for flexibility in practice. The technologies employed in the Swedish work package are not state of the art, instead, the state of the art a...
