Canine Handlers. Any Deputy Probation Officer assigned to handle a canine used for probation/law enforcement duties is required to and is responsible for the general care, grooming and home kenneling of the canine, and that such activities are compensated as described below:
Canine Handlers. The parties agree that a Deputy Sheriff assigned to handle a canine used for law enforcement duties is required to and is responsible for the general care, grooming and home kenneling of the canine, and that such activities are compensated as described below.
Canine Handlers. Canine Handlers will work a 4-10 schedule. The assigned working hours will be based on the needs of the Department and are subject to change, as determined by the Operations Division Commander. Handlers will not be required to be on call. In the event a Handler is contacted and requested for an emergency call out (as determined by the on-duty Watch Commander), normal call out compensation will apply. If, however, a Handler is placed on call, the Handler will be compensated according to the existing MOU. Canine training will occur on duty as follows:
a. The Canine Handler will participate in weekly Canine training with allied agencies. Absences may be allowed for emergencies, e.g., Handler or Dog illness; scheduled vacations; or, to accommodate the needs of the Department as determined by the Canine Coordinator or the Watch Commander.
b. The Canine Handlers will report for their weekly training at the designated location and time. The senior Handler will be responsible for notifying Dispatch and the Watch Commander each week of their training location and attendance prior to the commencement of training. The weekly training block is 6 hours. The remaining 4 hours of the Handler’s scheduled 10 hour shift will be considered as “Canine Maintenance Compensation” to provide for the care, grooming, exercise and maintenance of the Police Service Dogs and their equipment.
c. Once a month, Adlerhorst International (or the designated training facility) will schedule the required 8 hour requalification day. Handlers will attend as scheduled by the Canine Coordinator. The training day will be considered a normal 10 hour workday for all Handlers. The remaining 2 hours of that day will also be considered “Canine Maintenance Compensation” for the Handlers. The Handlers will receive a total of 14 hours of straight time compensation in a 29 day pay cycle (30 minutes a day, 7 days a week). This is to compensate the Handlers for time spent on care and maintenance of the Police Service Dog and equipment. The time off will be arranged with the Canine Coordinator. Attendance is mandatory. However, excused absences may be allowed for emergencies or Handler/Dog illness at the discretion of the Canine Coordinator.
d. A yearly P.O.S.T. certification is required for “Patrol and Detection” and attendance is mandatory. The Canine Coordinator will schedule the certification days. The Operations Division Commander will assign the days off for each Handler. The choice of days off will be ...
Canine Handlers. The workweek for those members assigned as canine handlers shall consist of thirty - five (35) hours based upon five (5) consecutive seven (7) hour workdays and two (2) consecutive days off. Members will receive eight (8) hours of pay for each seven (7) hour day worked to compensate for the weekly off – duty care and maintenance of the animals in his/her custody. It is the intent of this provision to provide full compensation as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act to those members who are responsible for the weekly care, feeding, exercising, and boarding of a Township – Owned dog for all on – duty and off – duty hours worked so engaged. The following exceptions will apply:
A. Anytime the canine handler is on an approved leave where the canine is boarded at an approved facility the canine handler will be changed with leave based on an eight (8) hour workday.
B. Anytime the canine is unable to work due to illness and boarded at an approved facility for a period of more than seventy – two hours the canine handler will revert to working an eight (8) hour workday.
Canine Handlers. It is recognized that activities including exercising, training, grooming and care of canines is to be performed during normal duty time. In recognition that canine handlers may on occasion have to perform work-related duties in caring for their dogs while off- duty, the Municipality shall pay each canine handler an extra 30 minutes per day at time-and-one-half of the employee’s factored rate of pay to cover such activities, without regard to whether the canine handler is, in fact, performing the duties on a particular day. If a canine handler is required to spend any additional time in duty-related functions, he/she shall first, if not an emergency situation, receive prior approval from his/her supervisor. If an emergency requires such extra duty then the canine handler shall promptly report the extra time to his/her supervisor. Under any circumstance, any additional time worked over and above the 30 minutes per day shall be promptly reported on the employee's time card. It is the policy of the Department that dogs in the canine program will be kenneled at home.
Canine Handlers. 1. Canine handlers that provide for the off-duty care and maintenance of the canine will be paid an additional three and one half (3.5) hours of compensable time per week (.5 hours per day for care and maintenance of the canine).
2. This canine handler pay will not be subject to shift differential pursuant to Article 8(6) of this Agreement or holiday pay pursuant to Article 8(10) of this Agreement. Canine handler pay is not eligible for compensatory time as defined in Article 8(7)(C) of this Agreement. Canine handler hours (i.e., three and one half hours per week) will count as time worked for purposes of calculating overtime in the eighty (80) hour work period but will not be included towards the hours or major fractions thereof worked in excess of the daily shift as provided in Article 8(7)(A) of this Agreement.
3. Canine handler pay shall be the exclusive compensation for the off-duty care and maintenance of the canine. No further hours for the off-duty care and maintenance of the canine will be worked without prior written approval from the Sheriff or the Sheriff’s designee. Such pay shall continue for the duration of the assignment. The Sheriff shall have full discretion to assign or remove an employee from such assignment which assignment is not subject to the negotiated grievance procedure.
4. The canine handler employee is not entitled to canine handler pay on any day when the canine is not in possession of the employee during off-duty hours.
5. The County and Association agree pursuant to 29 CFR 785.23 that they have reviewed the pertinent facts regarding a reasonable amount of off- duty time required to provide for the care and maintenance of the canine including but not limited to joint consultation with the assigned canine handler and have agreed that three and one half (3.5) off duty hours per week is a reasonable amount of time to accomplish such tasks, and no additional off-duty time is necessary to accomplish such tasks without written approval of the Sheriff or the Sheriff’s designee.
Canine Handlers. An officer assigned to canine duties will be provided with time for training and exercise during the officer’s regularly scheduled shift. The officer will be compensated for six (6) hours per workweek for off-duty care including weekends, holidays, and leave days, provided the canine is in the officer’s care.
Canine Handlers. A. Canine handlers will be selected in accordance with the Canine Unit Manual.
B. Currently assigned canine handlers will have priority, by Agency seniority or by selection by the Employer, in filling any new canine team vacancies.
C. Non-routine care of the canine, i.e., veterinary visits, etc., which occur off- duty will be compensable, in addition to the scheduled workday.
X. Xxxxxxxxxx as a canine handler will be a three (3) year minimum commitment; however, employees will not be prevented from testing for, and receiving, promotional opportunities while assigned as canine handlers.
E. The Employer acknowledges that the work of using canines to provide law enforcement services at Washington State Ferry terminals and on Washington State Ferry vessels is work that has historically been done by members of the bargaining unit.
