Common use of Captain Clause in Contracts

Captain. (a) The written exam shall consist of up to of 200 multiple choice and fill in the blank questions. (b) Oral and written exam questions shall be based solely on the following materials: the NFPA Fire Officer I, the Occupational Health and Safety Guide including Section 21 Guidance Notes, the Oakville Fire Department’s Company Officer Resource Manual and be referenced in the same. (c) The oral examination shall be done before an assessment board consisting of the Fire Chief or designate and two Deputy Chiefs. (d) A series of photos that depict emergency incidents shall be shown in presentation format to each candidate and prescribed and relevant questions will be asked about each photo. The candidate will be scored as to whether they mentioned all or any of the answers that the selection committee has predetermined to be acceptable. The marking scheme for the photo scenarios will ensure that no subjectivity exists, meaning that if a predetermined benchmark is attained a mark shall be given for attaining it. (i) Applicants must have a minimum five (5) years’ experience as a First Class Fire Fighter with the Oakville Fire Department unless there is mutual agreement between the parties to this agreement to lower the requirement. (ii) Those Fire Fighters hired after October 1, 2018 must have a minimum of four and a half (4.5) years of experience as a First Class Fire Fighter with the Oakville Fire Department unless there is mutual agreement between the parties to this agreement to lower the requirement. (f) Upon attaining the overall mark of 70% (or greater), the employee(s) shall be placed on the Officer Rank Promotional List in the order of the marks until a promotion is available, or for two (2) years. Once an employee has acted in a position, he/she shall not be required to re-qualify and he/she shall be placed on the Officer Rank Promotional List permanently. Any employee who has attained the acting position and acted in that position shall be promoted as his/her name comes up in the order as posted on the Officer Rank Promotional List. (g) The successful candidate shall be required to complete the NFPA Fire Officer I Program and participate in prescriptive on-shift training as provided by the Fire Department to ensure current standards are maintained.

Work as a First Class Fire Fighter with full time District engineer for no less than 1 year from the Oakville Fire Department unless there is mutual agreement between end of their probation period. Time may be waived by the parties to this agreement to lower Chief if no candidates meet the requirementminimum time requirements. (f) Upon attaining 2. Have either a Fire Officer 2 certification plus a Fire Safety Inspector certification or have an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science. 3. Pass a written, practical and oral exam from the overall mark District. The employee shall receive a score for each of 70% (or greater), these requirements by the employee(s) District. The District shall test for the Captain’s position as needed. A Captain’s promotion list shall be placed maintained and active at all times. The engineers who have successfully passed all three parts of the promotion test to Captain shall be ranked on the Officer Rank Promotional List in promotions list based on their overall test scores. Any engineer on the order Captains’ promotion list as of the marks until a effective date of this agreement, and any engineer who is added to the Captains’ promotion list during the term of this agreement, shall remain on the Captains’ promotion list for the duration of this agreement. The current Captain’s test given November 2017 and the current Captain’s list will expire on September 30, 2021. All Captain’s tests and the lists after the expiration of the current list will expire every 3 years on September 30. A Captain’s test will be given within 60 days of the expiration of the then current Captain’s test. In the event the District holds future promotion testing for the Captain’s position, engineers who take and pass the Captain’s testing shall be ranked on the promotions list based on their overall test scores; however, they will be placed at the bottom of the existing list based on their ranking. A minimum score of 70 percent is available, or for two (2) yearsrequired on each test. 4.
