Church. Church was a place that was common among participants in both groups, and was cited as an uncomfortable place where sex was not talked about. Statements like “it wasn’t what you did” and “you weren’t supposed to talk about sex there unless you were married” dominated discussions about talking about sex and sexual behavior at church. One participant, Xxxxxx, said that girls who became pregnant were afraid to even show their faces there. Given that church was, and still appeared to be, a part of so many participants’ lies, it could potentially be a place of support and a good place to have conversations about safer sex. However, it would be difficult to break cultural and religious barriers to engage in conversations other than abstinence, which is what is preached and taught in churches traditionally. When asked “who had the biggest influence on your sexual decision-making?”, the most common responses from participants who did not become pregnant by age 18 were: 1. themselves, 2. their friends, and their mother. For those who named themselves, they said they felt like they took in the information that people gave them but ultimately the choice was theirs. This indicates that these individuals were better able to withstand peer pressure and had more of a sense of how to achieve their goals. These participants indicated that they used protection to achieve their goal of not getting pregnant before age 18 (particularly condoms, and sometimes other birth control methods). Participants who named their mother as the biggest influence on their sexual decision-making who did not become pregnant by age 18 discussed conversation with their mothers that consisted mostly of open communication. These individuals talked about discussing pregnancy prevention, the importance of being safe, and “learning not to fall pregnant” with their mothers. Similar to much of the published literature, open communication with parents is key. Two participants who did not become pregnant by age 18 named their friends as the biggest influence on their sexual decision-making, which can be understood given what we learned about the large amount of peer pressure. However, five participants who did become pregnant by age 18 named their friends as the biggest influence on their sexual decision-making, suggesting that participants in that group were more likely to give in to the negative effects of peer pressure. They mentioned having sex before they were afraid of being made fun of because they...

Church. The clients, Develop Louisville and the Louisville Metro government, received a grant from the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Historic Preservation Fund. The City of Louisville wanted to recognize the Xxxxx Chapel’s role in the civil rights movement. While the Xxxxx congregation had a storied role in Louisville’s civil rights movement from the 1870s through the 1960s, Xxxx & Eastlake focused on a particular episode when the chapel served as a mass meeting place for those opposed to segregative zoning requirements instituted in Louisville during the early 20th century. In 1914–1915, the nascent NAACP combined forces with Louisville’s civil rights leaders to fight the new zoning ordinance, financing the court battle though mass meetings held at Xxxxx Chapel. The court case, Xxxxxx x. Xxxxxxxx, went to the Supreme Court in 1917, and Louisville’s ordinance was overturned. This marked the beginning of using mass meetings in churches to finance and gain support for national civil rights cases. For its role in the process Xxxxx Chapel was listed in the National Register in June 2020 with national significance.
