CollectCast and PROMISE Sample Clauses

CollectCast and PROMISE. ‌ CollectCast [24] is a P2P streaming service which operates entirely at the application level but infers and exploits properties of the underlying network. It is based on the idea of many senders and one receiver, multi-sourcing. Potential senders are selected from the DHT Pastry. No a priori selection is made for the diffusion process, so the overlay structure forms a mesh rather than a structured tree. Consequently, in our terminology it can be called a mesh-pull model. CollectCast uses both active and passive measurements and tomography techniques to acquire some informations about the underlying network topology and performance. These informations are used for peer selection. The status of peers and connections are continuously monitored and in case of a disruption, peer data-rates or the entire peer-list can be reassigned. The internal structure of the peers in CollectCast uses a layered architecture: Col- lectCast acquires the candidate peer-list from Pastry, although it could use any DHT or possibly even an unstructured (gossip-based) overlay. On top of CollectCast, a deriva- tive streaming application called PROMISE [23] is deployed, which handles media buffering and playback. The functionality of CollectCast is realized by a set of interacting components: Peer Selection A list of candidate peers is obtained from the underlying DHT. Using the inferred topology information, the Peer Selection component constructs the active peer list.
