Compound Subjects. A compound subject, you will recall, consists of two or more connected subjects having the same verb. When two subjects are connected by and, even if they are both singular, they are followed by a plural verb. Subjects joined by and take a plural verb.

Compound Subjects. When two nouns are joined by and (called a “compound subject”), a plural verb is usually used. Xxxx and May are curating the museum’s student exhibition this semester. However, if a compound subject refers to the same person or thing, use a singular verb. Prints and Illustrated Books is a department at the Museum of Modern Art. Compound Subjects with Singular Verbs When two nouns are connected by or or nor, use a singular verb. Neither Wenlei nor Xxxxx has completed the sketches yet. However, when a compound subject contains both a singular and a plural noun or pronoun joined by or or nor, the verb agrees with the closer part of the subject. The painting or prints hang on that wall. Sometimes a modifier before a compound subject requires the use of a singular verb. If the words each, any, or no come before the noun, use a singular verb. Compound Subjects. When you have a compound subject, how do you determine the form of the verb? When the compound subject is connected by “and,” the form of the verb should always be plural (even if you are combining two singulars; after all, 1 + 1 = 2). A pencil and a calculator are essential tools for taking a math exam. When the compound subject is connected by “or,” the form of the verb should correspond to the part of the subject closest to the verb. Either a pencil or a pen is acceptable for this exam.
