Distance data Sample Clauses

Distance data. The distance that the user has moved in the environment during a certain period could constitute a significant parameter that would allow the differentiation of the users. Android smartphone devices do not provide a sensor that generates the distance that the user has moved. The distance that a user has moved can be generated implicitly through the location data, where a method in the Android location API allows the developers to generate the distance moved during a certain period. The distance estimation can be calculated through the knowledge of the last two location estimations. Particular techniques are required to calculate the distance that the user has moved as the location estimations are based on earth coordinates and are represented in the degrees. The distance calculation technique is further analysed in the behavioural cue extraction section. The commercial off-the-shelf mobile phones do not provide a sensor for the distance that the user has moved within the environment. For that reason, there is a need to compute the distance the user has moved within the environment. Various methods have been proposed in order to compute the distance within the environment using sensors such as GPS or by using the pedometers in order to compute the distance that the user has walked. The use of location points from the fused location sensor was selected, from which the average travelled distance will be calculated in the next paragraph. The distance within the environment refers to the average distance the user moves within the environment every period of the location sampling frequency. The distance was calculated using the current and the previous location measurements represented in latitude and longitude. As latitude and longitude are in degrees there is a need to apply special techniques for calculating the distance. The initial approach would be to use Euclidean distance;; however, this does not take into account that the measurements are in degrees and also that the earth is a sphere. Another solution is Haversine formula [27], which considers that the earth is a sphere but according to literature [28] results in 0.5% error. For the above reasons, XxxxxXxxx focused on using Xxxxxxxx [29] which provides more accurate ellipsoidal models. The distance is represented in kilometres and refers to the average distance between two sequential location measurements. For the extraction of the speed data, the speed traces from the StudentLife dataset were used. ...
