Emergency Admission. An Inpatient Admission to a Hospital that results from an Emergency Medical Condition. Emergency Medical Condition (or Emergency) – A medical condition of recent onset and severity, including severe pain, that would lead a prudent layperson who acts reasonably and possesses an average knowledge of health and medicine, to believe that not receiving immediate medical attention could reasonably be expected to result in: ◼ Seriously jeopardizing the health of the person, or if a woman is pregnant, the health of the woman or her unborn child; ◼ Seriously impairing bodily function; or ◼ Causing serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. Emergency Medical Services – Those services that are necessary to screen, evaluate, and stabilize an Emergency Medical Condition. Gene Therapy - A treatment involving the administration of genetic material to modify or manipulate the expression of a gene or to alter the biological properties of living cells for therapeutic use.
