Evaluation of Teaching Performance. VII.11.1 Any evaluation of teaching performance required as part of this collective agreement (e.g. as part of tenure or promotion considerations) shall be conducted according to this article. VII.11.2 Assessment and evaluation of teaching shall be based on the effectiveness of the instructor, as indicated by command over subject matter, familiarity with recent developments in the field, preparedness, presentation, accessibility to students and influence on the intellectual and scholarly developments of students. VII.11.3 The parties agree that Student Course Evaluations contribute to the improvement of teaching within the University. Although these survey instruments provide important information about teaching performance, such opinions do not in themselves constitute an evaluation of teaching performance. Further, it is understood that not all opinions provided in Student Course Evaluations are relevant to the assessment and evaluation of teaching. Full consideration shall be given all materials required and permitted as part of any evaluation of teaching performance described in this agreement. VII.11.5 Teaching includes, but is not limited to, the following activities performed by members: (a) delivering courses; conducting seminars; guiding tutorials, laboratories; supervising fieldwork, and individual study projects; (b) preparing, grading and correcting assignments, tests and examinations; (c) guiding the work of teaching assistants, graders, and markers, as applicable; (d) guiding and evaluating students’ individual work, such as theses and papers; (e) consultations with students outside of class or laboratory time; (f) participating in the development of teaching methods, programs or course content; and (g) preparing course outlines, instructional material, laboratory exercises and course notes. VII.11.6 Any evaluation of a member’s teaching performance shall review all relevant information including but not limited to: (a) the teaching dossier submitted by the member, if applicable; (b) the size, type and nature and level of courses taught; (c) the nature of the subject matter; (d) the experience of the member with the course, and the number of new course preparations assigned to the member; (e) the role of the member and the method of delivery; (f) departmental and disciplinary variations in teaching methods and norms; (g) the pedagogical materials prepared by the member; (h) the member’s contributions in the areas of pedagogical development and innovation, and the complexity and risk such innovation entails; (i) Student Course Evaluations carried out in accordance with this agreement; (j) any pertinent accommodation arrangements.

(a) delivering courses; conducting seminars; guiding tutorials, ; overseeing laboratories; supervising fieldwork, and individual study projects;
(b) preparing, grading and correcting assignments, tests and examinations;
(c) guiding the work of teaching assistants, graders, and markers, as applicable;
(d) guiding xxxxxxx and evaluating students’ individual work; supervising undergraduate students conducting individual projects for academic credit, such as theses honour’s theses, reading courses, internships, and papersplacements, or community-based projects; supervising and mentoring of graduate students;
(e) consultations consulting with students outside of class or laboratory time;
(f) participating in the development of teaching methods, programs or course contentcontent and curriculum; and
(g) preparing course outlines, instructional material, laboratory exercises and exercises, course notes, assignments, final examinations and other materials.
VII.11.6 Any evaluation VII.4.5 Evaluation of a member’s teaching performance shall review all relevant information including but not limited toinformation, with the understanding that members must demonstrate that they have met the criteria by selecting from a broad variety of contributions and suitable indicators, as provided below:
(a) the teaching dossier submitted by the member, if applicable;
(b) a statement of teaching philosophy and a self-assessment indicating the candidate’s continuing commitment to educating students;
(c) the size, type and type, nature and level of courses taught;
(cd) the nature of the subject matter;
(de) the experience of the member with the course, and the number of new course preparations assigned to the member;
(ef) the role of the member and the method of delivery;
(fg) departmental and disciplinary variations in teaching methods and norms;
(g) the pedagogical materials prepared by the member;
(h) the member’s role in advancing pedagogy, curriculum and instruction such as administrative and committee service, directing and coordinating programs, guest lectures, and other presentations; examples of course revision, curriculum development, and teaching methods;
(i) leadership in the form of a candidate’s participation in some of the following: activities related to students’ academic careers; mentoring of colleagues on matters relating to teaching; workshops and/or teaching initiatives outside the department;
(j) contributions in the areas of pedagogical development and innovation, and the complexity and risk such innovation entails; participation and presentations in workshops and conferences/seminars on pedagogy; publication of textbooks; publications in practitioner journals; publication of practitioner books, editing journals or special issues related to pedagogy, creative work such as multimedia packages, electronic and internet materials;
(ik) Student Course Evaluations SETS carried out in accordance with this agreementAgreement;
(jl) any pertinent accommodation arrangementsformal peer reviews and/or comments from colleagues familiar with the candidate’s teaching and/or formal peer reviews;
(m) teaching-related recognitions, for example teaching awards and instructional development grants; and
(n) development of courses, or revisions to existing materials, that contribute to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenization.
VII.4.6 When available, experts’ opinions of the quality and impact of the member’s teaching shall be a consideration in the evaluation of a member’s teaching performance. These opinions may be reflected in, for example, input from external assessors as described in VII.12, peer feedback following in-class observation of teaching, teaching awards and nominations for such awards.
