Important Quality Attributes in eDiana. In this section, the quality attributes that are considered important for the reference architecture of eDiana are identified and defined. When developing products, one important decision is the selection of quality attributes that should be provided. Quality attributes compliance is not absolute and a trade-off between attributes should be done. For example, efficiency is often in conflict with other desirable quality goals such as portability and maintainability. Increases in efficiency usually come at the expense of these other characteristics (and vice versa). Advances in technology make finding the right balance a moving target. Faster microprocessors and cheaper memory make certain inefficiencies more tolerable, but demand for smaller less expensive devices increases the priority of efficiency for many applications. In the eDiana Reference Architecture document [47], a description of the eDiana architecture can be found. In this section, some parts are highlighted to identify the most important quality attributes. eDiana architecture must be distributed and heterogeneous. While the eDiana Platform describes a number of logical devices and functions, these can be physically implemented in a variety of forms, as there is no one-size-fits-all physical architecture for all the envisioned scenarios. To assure the portability and interoperability strict component orientation is used, where all components have the same functionality regardless of the scenario and different hardware interfaces are used to inter-connect components and to interact with the external environment. This way compatibility between different components and developed code portability on different hardware is guaranteed. So, quality attributes such as interoperability, portability... are very important. Moreover, the eDiana Platform identifies a number of components that can be extended in the future, so extensibility, scalability, modularity qualities will be also important. Although, energy efficiency is the goal of the system, in order to be coherent the reduction of the usage of resources (memory, CPU and especially energy…) in the eDiana platform and its devices must be also important.
