Mental model of radioactivity Sample Clauses

Mental model of radioactivity. As explained above in Section IV.3.1, the different terms 'radiation' (as in 'ionizing radiation') and 'radioactivity' were not necessarily connected in many lay public interviewees' mind. Very few spontaneously mentioned the word 'radioactivity' in the early stages of the interview. In a few cases, when the interviewee was completely unable to give any response to the opening prompt to tell about 'ionizing radiation' or 'radiation' ('rayonnement ionisant' or 'rayonnement'), the interviewer after patiently prompting with the same words and waiting, might introduce the word 'radioactivity'. This would have the effect of generating some associations and allowing the interview to move forward. In other cases, the term 'radioactivity' was introduced at the time of considering 'natural vs. artificial radiation' – because the idiomatic and more familiar term in French happens to be 'natural vs. artificial radioactivity'. In remaining cases, the word 'radioactivity' emerged spontaneously at a given point of the interview. The interviewer in every case followed up on the word, immediately or in good time, in order to obtain detail on knowledge, representations, and sometimes emotions attached to this notion which very often produced non‐verbal and verbal markers of considerable anxiety. Figure 18 on the next page is a fragment of the full lay public Mental Model presented at the front of this report. It highlights the various concepts that revolve around the word 'radioactivity' (which, according to the individual, is more – or less – associated with other topics examined in the interview, including ionizing radiation and medical imaging). This map shows that there is a high consciousness of a variety of risks associated with radioactivity, and of a broad range of significant impacts.
