Common use of Preliminary Step Clause in Contracts

Preliminary Step. A Member having an individual grievance will first attempt to resolve it informally in a meeting with the Member’s immediate supervisor. Such attempt at informal resolution shall be made by the Member-grievant within fourteen (14) calendar days following the events or circumstances giving rise to the grievance having occurred or were first known by the Member-grievant. Grievances brought to the attention of the supervisor, (except for automatic time extensions as hereinafter described in Section 7.7) beyond the fourteen (14) calendar day time limit shall not be considered. At this Step, there is no requirement that the grievance be submitted or responded to, in writing, however, a Grievance Representative may accompany the grievant to the meeting with the supervisor should the Grievant request the attendance of the Grievance Representative. If the Member is not satisfied with the oral response from the immediate supervisor at this Step, the Grievant may pursue the formal Steps which follow. Before a grievance is placed in writing pursuant to Step One, such grievance shall be reviewed by the Grievance Chair and the appropriate Grievance Representative.

Before a grievance is placed in writing pursuant to Step One, such grievance shall be reviewed screened by the Grievance Chair Chairman and the appropriate Grievance Representative.
