Protocol Roles. In order to begin deriving a protocol for re-negotiating a contract, the roles that each participant plays in the protocol must be clarified. In this work we define two roles: the resource provider and the customer4. In our opinion defining these roles, rather than abstract ‘agreement initiator/responder’ roles, highlights the natural asymmetry of resource provision from resource consumption. As we will show in Section 5, by explicitly considering the requirements of the service provider, we can also remove the possibility of a denial-of-service attack on them.
