Responsibilities of USCMS Sample Clauses

Responsibilities of USCMS. During the approximate one month of heavy ion collisions at the LHC the USCMS Tier-1 facility at Fermilab will receive the raw data files and the prompt reconstruction files from the CMS Tier-0 facility in a manner similar to how comparable files are received during the several months proton-proton collisions produced at the LHC. The heavy ion data files will be written to the USCMS tape archival storage at the Fermilab Tier-1 following the same CMS time constraints as for the proton collision data tape archival storage. In addition, the heavy ion data files will be made available on disk storage at the Fermilab Tier-1 to allow further copy of the data to the Vanderbilt Tier-2 facility. The parties will insure that the data transfers between Fermilab and Vanderbilt are completed successfully. In addition to receiving and archiving data from the CERN Tier-0, Fermilab will provide custodial access to re-reconstructed data that will be copied back from the Vanderbilt Tier 2. Up to two re-reconstruction passes are foreseen per year. If access to re-reconstructed data is needed, it will be staged from tape to disk and then transported to Vanderbilt as part of the normal Tier 1 data access service. The quantity of data that will be stored in the mass storage system at Fermilab is shown in Table 2 below. This information is for planning purposes only. Better estimates will become available once the LHC Heavy Ion program begins. If the amount of storage is significantly different than shown, the parties agree to renegotiate the levels of support. Table 2: Estimated Heavy Ion Data Tape Storage Requirements Year HI Tape Storage at FNAL (PetaByte) 2010 0.56 2011 0.96 2012 0.45 2013 1.44 2014 1.44 At the Fermilab Tier 1, tapes are stored in robotic mass storage systems. Tape slots in these systems can only be obtained by adding cabinets with large number of slots. Planning for the needed slots is a challenge, especially since tape technology is changing rapidly and the number of Gigabytes/slot is growing. However, migrating data from low density to higher density media and takes time so different media, often needing different tapes drives for access, must coexist in the storage system. The Tier 1 staff and VUCMS staff will work together to develop an efficient and economical strategy for tape slot utilization.
