Common use of Second Language and Sign Language Premium Clause in Contracts

Second Language and Sign Language Premium. 13.5.1 When fluency in a second language or Sign Language is a specified requirement for particular positions in addition to the basic functions, employees will receive a premium of 5% of their normal rate of pay. 13.5.2 A second language or Sign Language is understood to be required where: a) it is a posted requirement for new or vacant positions; or b) it is applied to particular positions or employees by the College with the agreement of the Union. 13.5.3 The premium will not apply when the second language or Sign Language requirement represents the primary responsibilities of positions and is identified and compensated. 13.5.4 When fluency in a second language or Sign Language is not a specified requirement for particular positions, Supervisors may request employees to use their second or sign language to facilitate communications with students or the public. Employees who agree to use their second language or Sign Language will receive a premium of 5% of their normal rate of pay for each day they agree to use their language.
