Serious games. A serious game is a game designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment."[54] Motivation is a key factor in any learning activity and in the case of ASC children it is a special challenge. Creating a "serious game" that will have an entertainment value and combining it with an educational programme is a must for this project. A special category of games that is currently gaining momentum with children (and adults) is "Virtual Worlds". Virtual worlds integrate gaming and social experiences and therefore supply the perfect tool for promotion of learning and of training social skills. Developing virtual worlds is the approach taken in this project and therefore we present in the following paragraphs some of the leading virtual worlds for children. Although they are not suitable for ASC children and are surely not planned to train their social skills – they still give some important background information for the specialized virtual world that we plan to develop.
