Statistical Machine Translation. ‌ The task of a machine translation system is to take a document in some source lan- guage, and translate it into coherent target language text with the same meaning. At a very high level, statistical MT systems work by searching through a database of known human translations to find the correct translation of each piece of the source document. These translation fragments are then stitched together to form the final target language output. Systems of this type are considered to be statistical in nature because the system’s deci- sions about which translations to use and how to put them together are based primarily on statistics gathered from large parallel corpora: collections of documents that have been translated by humans between the source and target languages. A standard statistical MT system is run as a pipeline with two stages: first, the system learns a database of translation rules from a parallel corpus.
