Types of Abatement. Abatement refers to a group of measures that can be expected to eliminate or reduce exposures to lead hazards for at least 20 years under normal conditions, in accordance with standards established by the EPA. There are four typical methods of abatement, including building component replacement, enclosure or encapsulation systems, onsite and offsite paint removal, and soil removal or covering. See HUD’s Guidelines for LBP Hazards, Chapters 12 and 13.
