UPS-Université Xxxx Xxxxxxxx. The Research Institute of Computer Science (IRIT, Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse) at the Science University of Toulouse (Université Xxxx Xxxxxxxx, UPS) was founded in 1990. It is one of the largest computer science centres in France. XXXX xxxxxxx together more than 500 members among which 400 researchers, faculty members, and Ph.D. students affiliated to CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), INPT (Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse), UPS (Université Xxxx Xxxxxxxx), UT1 (Université Toulouse 1 Sciences Sociales) and UTM (Université Toulouse le Mirail). Research at IRIT covers most of the fields where computer and information science is in progress, be it in its core, ranging from computer architecture to software engineering and computer networks, or in its most contemporary developments like artificial intelligence and cognitive systems, natural language processing, multimedia man-machine interaction, image interpretation and synthesis. IRIT has long experience in participating and managing collaborative and networking projects. In 1988, he created IRIS, the research institute on the uses of sign language, which experiments and studies how to bring sign language in education, teaching, culture… One of its main result is an experimental integrated school for deaf children where teaching is in sign language and teachers are deaf. He now leads the research department of IRIS. Since six years, he leads a new research group on sign language analysis at IRIT. Researches are about gesture and facial expression analysis, grammar modelling of sign language, video corpus analysis by image processing, and graphical forms of sign language. This group took part in several national projects on French Sign Language (LSF), implying of the researchers in linguistics, computer science and of associations of deaf persons (XX-Xxxxx, uses of the Internet-WebSourd, LS-Script). This group is the leader in the constitution of scientific consortium of universities, enterprises and associations, “Pôle Signe Toulousain”, concerning signs language studies, teaching, translation and interpretation. Two theses have been completed: “sign recognition and SL modelling of signing space” and “SL facial expressions tracking and recognition”; and three are about to be completed: “interaction gesture tracking and recognition”; “face tracking and augmented reality” and “SL writing”.
