From the subgrade elevation to an elevation at least 12 inches above the top of the outside barrel of the pipe, the banks of trenches in all cases shall be excavated to vertical lines and the trenches shall be not less than 12 inches nor more than 16 inches wider than the outside diameter, at the barrel of the pipe to be laid therein. The trenches shall be excavated true to line so that a clear space not less than 6 inches or more than 8 inches in width is provided on each side of the barrel of the pipe. If sheeting is required, the foregoing dimensions shall be applicable to the inside faces of the sheeting.
