A successful pilot test in the nearby Delta field Upper Shaunavon formation was done between 2007 and 2008. The Xxxx field has higher operating costs and lower netbacks than the average property in South-West Saskatchewan. This is due in part to the small volume/well ratio and increased servicing and maintenance costs due to deviated wellbores. The MEOR project was implemented hoping to provide relief for declining well productivity and to increase ultimate oil recovery. The technology is based on manipulating the interaction between the bacterial cells which are present in a petroleum reservoir and the oil-water interface. In the process, special nutrients are injected so specific groups of bacteria are stimulated to grow and divide in a way which causes them to partition to the oil- water interface and release oil. Also the microbes coating the surface of the oil droplets causes the oil and water to form a temporary micro emulsion that blocks off high permeability sections, forcing water into low permeable area, and thus enhance water flooding sweep efficiency.
