Major leaks definition

Major leaks means that main water drain and feed pipes (often located in the basement) are seriously leaking. (Leaks present at specific facilities have already been evaluated under the checklist items for “Bathroom” and “Kitchen.”)

Leaks causing serious and persistent levels of rust or contamination in the drinking water can be determined by observing the color of the drinking water at several taps. Badly corroded pipes will produce noticeably brownish water. If the tenant is currently occupying the unit, he or she should be able to provide information about the persistence of this condition. (Make sure that the “rusty water” is not a temporary condition caused by city or town maintenance of main water lines.) See general note under 6.5.
