BIOFUELS IN EUROPE. Biofuels have the potential to substitute fossil fuels in transportation; at least in parts. In 2003, the EU commission released a directive (EU Directive 2003/30/EC; Europäisches Parlament, 2003) that until 2010 all member states should substitute about 5.75% of the whole fuel usage by biofuels. At the moment, there are mainly two biofuels that can be produced industrially: ◗ Biodiesel for diesel engines made out of colza, palm oil, sunflowers, soy, … or old cooking fat and ◗ Bioethanol for Xxxx or gasoline engines made in the process of alcoholic fermentation of biomass out of sugar cane, sugar beets, potatoes, sun flowers, paper, wood, straw… A relatively new biofuel development is called BTL (biomass to liquid) or 2nd generation of biofuels. The main new idea behind BTL is to use the whole plant for the biofuels production, not only the seeds or some parts of the plant. Right now, an industrial large-scale production isn’t possible, but a much research is done and major investments are undertaken. Daimler Chrysler, for example, is cooperating with a BTL producer in Sachsen, Germany, in order to push this development. In 2003 the percentage of biofuels used in the EU was quite low, as the figure below shows (data according to Asociación de Productores de Energías Renovables; APPA, 2006).

  • WSIB & LTD An Employee who is receiving benefits under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, or under a LTD plan, is not entitled to benefits under a school board’s sick leave and short term disability plan for the same condition unless the employee is on a graduated return to work program then WSIB/LTD remains the first payor. For clarity, where an employee is receiving partial benefits under WSIB/LTD, they may be entitled to receive benefits under the sick leave plan, subject to the circumstances of the specific situation.
