Care of Seedlings. 2.7 The Contractor shall ensure that seedlings, either loose or in boxes, are at all times stored and handled in a manner to prevent damage from freezing, overheating, rapid temperature fluctuations, excess moisture, drying, physical injury, and exposure to injurious substances. Care of Seedlings. Roots of seedlings must be kept moist at all times. The supply of seedlings at the planting site must be stored in a cool, shady place and never left exposed to the sun or wind. If at any time Contractor observes mold, frozen roots, dry roots, or other evidence of injury, Contractor must immediately notify OPRD. If seedlings may be damaged in planter’s bags due to stuffing, the number of seedlings per bag shall be restricted as determined by OPRD. Rough handling of seedlings is prohibited, including throwing, rolling, bursting seedlings boxes, or abusing individual seedlings. Contractor shall not root prune, top prune, or cull seedlings. If it should appear that any of these treatments are necessary, the conditions shall be reported to OPRD to arrange the necessary Work. During the planting process, planters shall remove one seedling at a time from the planting bag or other container to prevent drying of roots. All bare root seedlings shall be dipped in water and starch base polymer solution immediately prior to planting to ensure root moisture.
