The resulting composition is 0.05, or 5 percent (5%). In other words, 5 percent (5%) of the sampled material, by weight, is carpet. This finding is then projected onto the stratum being examined in this step of the analysis. • for j = 1 to m, where m = number of components Sample 1 Sample 2 Sample 3 Weight (c) of carpet 5 3 4 Total Sample Weight (w) 80 70 90 The confidence interval for this estimate will be derived in two (2) steps. First, the variance around the estimate will be calculated, accounting for the fact that the ratio included two (2) random variables (the component and total sample weights). The variance of the ratio estimator equation follows: ⎛ ∑(c − r w )2 ⎞ ⎛ 1 ⎞⎛ 1 ⎞⎜ Var(rj ) ≈ ⎜ ⎟⎜ ⎟⎜ i ⎟ (2) ⎝ n ⎠⎝ w 2 ⎠⎜ n − 1 ⎟ ⎠ ∑ wi
