Censoring Sample Clauses

Censoring. The observed times will often include those for some individuals who do not fail during their observation period; the data on these individuals are said to be right censored. This can occur when the individual is lost to follow up or withdraws from the study. An individual who enters the study at time 𝑡0 , and may cross the threshold for the event at time 𝑡0 + 𝑡. When censored, 𝑡, is unknown because the event is unobserved. If the individual was last assessed at time 𝑡0 + 𝑐 , then the time 𝑐 is the censored failure time. Censored patients cannot simply be removed from the analysis, as this will create a missing not at random process which will affect inferences and lead to bias. Other types of censoring include left censoring, when the event of interest occurs before a patient becomes under observation, and interval censoring, when the event is known to have occurred but at a time that is known only with limited precision (Xxxxx, Xxxxxxxx et al. 1997).
