Couplings. A. General: Fabricated stainless steel piping shall be shop-prepared for pipe couplings where specified. Unless otherwise indicated, couplings shall be arched-band or grooved type.

Unless otherwise specified in the particular equipment sections, equipment with a driver greater than 1/2-HP, and where the input shaft of a driven unit is directly connected to the output shaft of the driver, shall have its two shafts connected by a flexible coupling which can accommodate angular misalignment, parallel misalignment and end float, and which cushions shock loads and dampens torsional vibrations. The flexible member shall consist of a tire with synthetic tension members bonded together in rubber. The flexible member: attached to flanges by means of clamping rings and cap screws, and the flanges: attached to the stub shaft by means of taperlock bushings which shall give the equivalent of a shrunk-on fit. There: no metal-to-metal contact between the driver and the driven unit. Each coupling: sized and provided as recommended by the coupling manufacturer for the specific application, considering horsepower, speed of rotation, and type of service.
