Current Safeguards Regime Sample Clauses

Current Safeguards Regime. A cornerstone of the World Bank’s work on investment projects is helping to ensure strong protections for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people and for the environment. The World Bank’s current policies that address environmental and social issues that arise in any World Bank financed projects – often referred to as “safeguards” – were developed over the last 20 years to help identify, avoid, and minimize xxxxx to people and the environment. Through the application of these safeguards in the preparation and supervision of World Bank financed projects (and the relevant provisions in the legal agreements between the World Bank and any Borrower17), the World Bank requires Borrowers to address certain environmental and social risks in order to receive World Bank investment financing for development projects. The objectives of the World Bank safeguards are to (i) avoid, minimize, mitigate and/or compensate for adverse environmental and social impacts; (ii) ensure that environmental and social issues are thoroughly evaluated during the preparation and implementation of World Bank financed projects; (iii) provide a mechanism for consultation with project affected peoples and civil society and for disclosure of relevant project information to project affected people and other stakeholders. The World Bank safeguards are set forth in ten Operational Policies (OPs) and their corresponding Bank Procedures (BPs): OP/ BP 4.01 (Environmental Assessment), OP/BP 4.04 (Natural Habitats), OP 4.09 (Pest Management), OP/BP 4.37 (Safety of Dams), (OP/BP 4.36 (Forests), OP/BP 4.12 (Involuntary Resettlement), OP 4.10 (Indigenous Peoples), OP/BP 4.11 (Physical Cultural Resources), OP/BP 7.50 (Projects on International Waterways), and OP/BP 7.60 (Projects in Disputed Areas). There is also a policy on piloting the use of Borrower systems to address environmental and social safeguards issues in World Bank-supported projects (OP/BP 4.00). The OPs and BPs referred in the previous paragraph (i.e., the WB Safeguard Policies) apply to the most common type of financing provided by the World Bank: investment project financing. Development Project Financing18 and Program for Results19 are governed by OP/BP 8.60 and OP/BP 9.00, respectively.
