Somali focus particles. Every declarative Somali main clause contains some kind of focus particle. This makes focus particles crucial for understanding agreement in clauses and how they may influence word order. Therefore, a brief overview of Somali focus particles is necessary, even though this study primarily focuses on the particle waxaa. Somali focus particles include baa, ayaa, waa and waxaa. Focus particles baa/ayaa are often used in similar contexts and can sometimes be interchangeable. Both particles are placed after the element they focus on (see example (13) where Xxxx is focused), which is usually the subject of the sentence. On the other hand, Waxaa in main clauses states that the noun phrase at the end of the sentence is focused. There is currently no existing research discussing solely the focus particle waxaa. Saeed (2000) illustrates waxaa as a cleft type of focus particle, in an 2expletive element waxaa precedes the verb, and the focused elements follow the verb. The most common word order in Somali is SOV, However, when waxaa is used to focus the noun phrase, the word order becomes SVO or OVS instead, this study explores into this phenomenon. Xxxxxxx & Xxxxxxxxx (2018: 185-87) point out, a sentence containing waxaa and a noun phrase after the verb (which is focused) is semantically the same as a sentence with the same noun phrase preceding the verb and marked with focus particle baa/ayaa. Sentences (13) and (14) convey the same semantic meaning; however, the placement of the focus particle differs between the sentences. In sentence (13), the focus particle ayaa follows the subject noun Asli, but, in sentence (14), the focus particle precedes the subject noun Asli.
