Mechanical Seals. 1. Pumps shall be provided with tandem double mechanical seals running in an oil reservoir, composed of two separate lapped face seals. The lower seal unit, between the pump and oil chamber, shall consist of one stationary and one positively driven, rotating tungsten-carbide or silicon-carbide ring, with each pair of rings held in contact by a separate spring. The upper seal unit, between the oil sump and the motor housing, shall consist of one stationary tungsten- carbide or silicon-carbide ring and one positively driven silicon-carbide or rotating carbon ring. Ceramic seals will not be acceptable. The seals shall require neither maintenance nor adjustment and shall be easily replaceable. Conventional double mechanical seals with a single or a double spring between the rotating faces, or that require constant differential pressure to effect sealing and are subject to opening and penetration by pumping forces, will not be acceptable. The submersible pumps shall be capable of continuous submergence without loss of watertight integrity to a depth of 65 feet.
