OHIP Eligibility - Definitions. (1) Family Premium The family premiums covers married employees who elect for family premium coverage or one parent who is supporting a family. The family premium covers both spouses and children under the age of 21 years who are unmarried, not employed, and dependent for support upon the insured person. This includes an adopted child or one to whom the insured person stands in the position of a parent and for whom claim can be made for deduction of income tax purposes. Also eligible as dependents are children aged 21 and over who are financially dependent upon the insured person because of physical or mental infirmity, provided each such child was financially dependent upon that person prior to the age of 21 years. The family premium does not cover dependent fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.
