Paraprofessional Patient Services. Paraprofessional positions include: Child Service Professional, Substance Abuse Specialist and Peer Support Specialist. They must meet minimum qualifications in the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Manual to provide these services. The Substance Abuse Specialist must complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education every two years; the Peer Support Specialist must complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education training annually of which at least 12 hours must be face-to-face training. Paraprofessional staff shall have a supervision plan and receive at a minimum monthly supervision. If Substance Abuse Specialist staff are hired with 3 years of experience, experience must be documented in their privileging file.

Paraprofessionals must be certified and meet the minimum qualifications set in the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Rehabilitative Behavioral Health Services (RBHS) Provider Manual to provide these services. The SAS must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of continuing education every two (2) years; the PSS must complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education training annually of which at least twelve (12) hours must be face-to-face training.
