Site Location and Setting Sample Clauses

Site Location and Setting. The Cohoes former MGP Site, which occupies an area of approximately 10 acres, is located in the City of Cohoes, Albany County, New York. A Site location map is provided as Figure 1-1, and plan of the current Site configuration is shown on Figure 1-2. The Site is bordered by: XXX Xxxxx 000 to the west; a distributary channel of the Mohawk River to the east; and residential properties to the north and south. In the northern part of the Site, Linden Street (a paved street) is positioned on the east side of the Site, aligned in a north-south direction, near the top of the riverbank. Near the middle of the Site, the road turns, where it becomes Whitehall Street (a paved street) and is aligned in an east-west orientation and runs from the eastern side of the Site to the western side. On the western side of the Site, Whitehall Street climbs partway up the steep embankment, and then turns toward the south and is aligned in a north-south orientation. Prior to the construction NYS Route 787 and prior to connecting Whitehall Street to Xxxxxx Xxxxxx, Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxx formerly continued to the north in an alignment that is approximately parallel to the existing alignment of NYS Route 787 (refer to Drawing C-103 in Appendix K). Remnants of several former MGP structures are present at the Site, primarily in the subsurface, including: two gas holders, referred to as the western and eastern gas holders, a structure that housed a purifier room, a retort, an engine room and oil room, a meter room (collectively referred to as the purifier room), and a tar filter. Much of the Site has a gentle eastward slope toward the Mohawk River channel (see Figure 1-2). Directly adjacent to the river channel, the grade is generally steeper, although the bank is not as abrupt in the southern part of the Site. On the west side of the Site there is a steep embankment above which XXX Xxxxx 000 is located. Route 787 is built over the former Champlain Canal (refer to Drawing C-103 in Appendix K). The northern, approximately two-thirds of the Site, is a relatively flat-lying field, mostly grass-covered, although the grass cover is thinner and locally absent in the northern part of this area. An area near the east-central part of the Site is paved; this includes the area where the former St. Michael’s Community Center building was positioned. This building was demolished in 2008. A sanitary sewer lift station (referred to as Pump Station No. 10), owned and operated by the City of Cohoes, is locate...
