When can I take FMLA leave. Eligible employees may use FMLA leave for one or more of the following reasons: • The birth of a child and care for a newborn; • The care for a newly-adopted child or child recently placed in an employee’s home for xxxxxx care; • To care for a spouse, child or a parent (but not parent-in-law) who has a serious health condition; or • An employee’s own serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform one or more of the essential functions of his or her job. Family leave to care for a newborn child or for adoption or xxxxxx care placement of a child must be completed within twelve months of the birth, adoption or placement of the child.
