Code for Sustainable Homes definition

Code for Sustainable Homes is a means of driving continuous improvement, greater innovation and exemplary achievement in sustainable home building. It measures the sustainability of new homes within nine categories and uses a 1-6 star rating system to communicate the overall sustainability performance of a new home. The code sets minimum standards for nine categories including energy and water use at each level. Following consultation the government made a code rating mandatory for all developments where a local authority received a building notice, initial notice or full plans application from 1st May 2008.
