This incorporation pre-dates the creation of Nunavut, with the passing of the Northwest Territories Aboriginal Custom Adoption Act in 1994, which Nunavut inherited when it was created in 1999.

Custom Adoption: is the practice of transferring the on-going primary care and responsibility for an Aboriginal child from a current parent or caregiver to a new caregiver according to the traditions, practices and customs of the band.
