Retention basin definition

Retention basin means a type of storage practice, that has no positive outlet, used to retain storm water run-off for an indefinite amount of time. Run-off from this type of basin is removed only by infiltration through a porous bottom or by evaporation.
Retention basin means a stormwater management facility which, similar to a detention basin, temporarily impounds runoff and discharges its outflow through an outlet to a downstream channel. A retention basin is a permanent impoundment.
Retention basin means a ground depression area designed to retain flows from storm water runoff, to encourage infiltration into surrounding sub-surface soils, and may include overflow piping. A retention basin allows debris to settle from the storm water discharge and must be periodically cleaned and dredged.

Examples of Retention basin in a sentence

  • Retention basin construction procedures and the overall sequence of site construction are two key factors that can control the effectiveness of retention basins.

More Definitions of Retention basin

Retention basin means a storm water management basin that captures storm water runoff and does not discharge directly to a surface water body. The water is "discharged" by infiltration or evaporation.
Retention basin means a storm water management pond that maintains a permanent pool of water. These storm water management ponds include a properly engi- neered/designed volume dedicated to the temporary storage and slow release of runoff waters.
Retention basin means a storm water management basin designed to retain some water on a permanent basis.
Retention basin means a facility designed to store runoff from rainfall or snow melt with no outlet. The stored water is allowed to percolate into the ground. (See also Detention Pond, Detention Basin and Retention Pond).
Retention basin means one in which storm runoff is collected and stored for a significant period and released after the storm runoff has ended: it is retained. Retention basins are wet reservoirs which have special recreational, fire protection and aesthetic uses centered around a minimum pool.
Retention basin means a structure or feature designed to retain stormwater over a period of time, with its release being positively controlled over a longer period of time than a typical stormwater “detention” storage facility.
Retention basin means a designated area for total storage, without overland relief, of flows generated during a design storm.
