ASSOCIATION DUES AND OTHER DEDUCTIONS FROM SALARY. A. The Board agrees to deduct from employees’ salaries dues in specified amounts for local, state, and/or national professional associations when requested in writing by the employees on Board forms and forms supplied by the Association through the Maine Education Association and satisfactory to the Board. Said dues shall be remitted to the Maine Education Association as the agent of the Association at reasonable intervals, all subject to the following: 1. No change in the specified rate of such deductions shall be made after September 1, of any school year. 2. The total of such dues for the school year shall be deducted in equal amounts from the paychecks remaining to be issued that school year commencing with the first check in October. 3. Dues deductions shall continue automatically from year to year unless canceled in writing by the employee during the first two (2) weeks in August preceding the school year in which the cancellation becomes effective. 5. The Association shall indemnify and save the Board harmless against all claims and suits, which may arise by reason of making any such deductions, the cancellation of the same, and remitting the same to apparently authorized officials of the Maine Education Association. The Maine Education Association shall be accountable to the Association for the allocation and payment of each employee’s dues to the respective professional associations, as authorized on the respective dues deduction forms. Employees may, in writing, authorize such additional deductions for local United Fund Campaigns and such other purposes as are approved by both the Board and Association, again subject to the normal capacity of automatic data processing equipment of the City of Portland to handle the same, and subject to such reasonable regulations as the Board and/or the Superintendent may prescribe. In the event the rate of such membership dues is changed, the Association shall give its membership and the Board written notice prior to the effective date of such change. D. Such meetings will not be scheduled during the normal workday and with reasonable advance notice to and approval by the Principal concerned. 3. No deductions need be made by the Board if they are at any time beyond the normal capacity of automatic data processing equipment of the City of Portland to handle in the same manner as other payroll deductions.
42. Dues deductions shall continue automatically from year to year unless canceled in writing by the employee during the first two (2) weeks in August preceding the school year in which the cancellation becomes effectiveteacher.
53. The Board agrees to provide employees who choose to participate with direct payroll deposit. Effective September 1, 2002 each new teacher shall have their paycheck directly deposited in a banking institution designated by the teacher. All teachers hired after the effective date of this Agreement shall receive their notification of direct deposit electronically. Teachers hired prior to the effective date of this Agreement and who currently receive a hard copy of their paystub may continue to receive a hard copy of their paystub for the duration of this Agreement.
B. The Association shall indemnify and save the Board harmless against all claims and suits, which suits that may arise by reason of making any such deductions, the cancellation of the same, and remitting the same to apparently authorized officials of the Maine Education Association. The Maine Education Association shall be accountable to the Association for the allocation and payment of each employee’s teacher's dues to the respective professional associations, as authorized on the respective dues deduction dedications forms.
B. Employees C. In addition to deductions for state and federal taxes and the Maine State Retirement System, teachers may, in writing, authorize such additional deductions for local United Fund Campaigns Way Campaigns, group sickness and such other purposes as are accident insurance, dental insurance, State group life insurance, South Portland Federal Credit Union, and approved tax shelter annuities. An approved list of tax shelter annuities shall be developed by both the Superintendent of Schools after consultation with representatives of the South Portland Teachers Association. Teachers currently contributing to tax-shelter annuities not on the approved list shall be allowed to continue their enrollment in these programs.
D. No deductions need be made by the Board and Association, again subject to if they are beyond the normal capacity of automatic data processing equipment of the City of Portland to handle the same, and subject to such reasonable regulations as the Board and/or the Superintendent may prescribeSouth Portland.
