CONCEPTUAL MODELS AND COMMON METADATA SCHEMA Sample Clauses

CONCEPTUAL MODELS AND COMMON METADATA SCHEMA. Content providers use different models according to historical reasons and intents of the different projects. Some databases are more oriented towards the text of an inscription, some more on the object bearing the inscription, but always the two natures of the inscribed document coexist. To facilitate the exchange of information and improve interoperability, on the side of data models to describe this kind of information, the EAGLE consortium considered two sets of standards, already widely used in the Cultural Heritage community:  The EpiDoc standard, based on TEI, which offers a full way to give a description of the textual document.  The CIDOC CRM conceptual model, which is explicitly oriented towards Cultural Heritage objects and offers an articulated way to best describe them. EpiDoc/XML had already been choosen by many EAGLE Content Providers also as an export format, promoting the use of this standard and the making data already in EpiDoc available and accessible for future projects and research. EpiDoc allows the content to be described fully for what concerns the text of inscriptions, drawing on more than a decade long experimenting and development of this standard thanks to a vast and active international community of Digital epigraphists. Many Content Providers decided to describe their content also using the CIDOC CRM conceptual model, to enable a further full description which is more oriented to consider epigraphies as objects, rather than as inscriptions. In this way it is possible to get the best of both worlds and and have a complete interoperable description of the epigraphic assets. It also becomes easier to map the two descriptions to the Common EAGLE Matadata Model, which is the one used internally by the aggregator on the EAGLE server in order to deliver efficiently the functionality described in Deliverable D3.1. Representing the epigraphic world in CIDOC CRM has also the advantage the the descriptions of the epigraphies can be expressed in the RDF formalism in the most natural way, showing the properties and relationships of the many values associated with an epigraphy. The RDF representation in turn leads the way to link (some of) the epigraohies to the growing “cloud” of the Linked Open Data (LOD), i.e. the “Semantic Web”, increasing the usefulness and visibility of the EAGLE assets. The same RDF representation is also the one chosen for the translations in the EAGLE MediaWiki6 which uses wikibase as a software to produce wikid...
