Concussion Information Sample Clauses

Concussion Information. Concussion is a brain injury. Concussions, as well as all other head injuries, are serious. They can be caused by a bump, a twist of the head, sudden deceleration or acceleration, a blow or jolt to the head, or by a blow to another part of the body with force transmitted to the head. You can’t see a concussion, and more than 90% of all concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury or can take hours or days to fully appear. All concussions are potentially serious and, if not managed properly, may result in complications including brain damage and, in rare cases, even death. Even a “ding” or a bump on the head can be serious. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms or signs of concussion yourself, your child should be immediately removed from play, evaluated by a medical professional and cleared by a medical doctor.

They can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or a bump on the head can be serious. You can’t see a concussion and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Concussion Information. My initials in each of the blanks, below, indicate that I have read and understood each of the following statements: A concussion is a brain injury, which I am responsible for reporting to a UNC Campus Health Services physician or athletic trainer. A concussion can affect your ability to perform everyday activities, your reaction time, balance, sleep, and classroom performance. You can’t see a concussion, but you might notice some of the symptoms right away. Other symptoms can show up hours or days after the injury. If I suspect a teammate has a concussion, I am responsible for reporting the injury to a UNC Campus Health Services physician or athletic trainer. I will not return to play in a game or practice if I have received a blow to the head or body that results in concussion related symptoms. Following concussion the brain needs time to heal. You are much more likely to have a repeat concussion, if you return to play before your symptoms resolve. In rare cases, repeat concussions can cause permanent brain damage and even death. I understand that although certified helmets meeting a standard for helping to prevent catastrophic injuries may be used in my sport, they do not prevent cerebral concussions. I should wear a helmet at all times during participation if my sport requires it. Concussion symptoms include but are not limited to:  Amnesia  Confusion  Headache  Loss of consciousness  Balance problems or dizziness  Double or fuzzy vision  Sensitivity to light or noise  Nausea (feeling that you might vomit)  Feeling sluggish, foggy or groggy  Feeling unusually irritable  Concentration or memory problems  Slowed reaction time
Concussion Information. I have read the information included in the handbook*. I understand its contents. IHSA Policy requires athletes to provide their school with written clearance from either a physician licensed to practice medicine in all its branches or a certified athletic trainer working in conjunction with a physician licensed to practice medicine in all its branches prior to returning to play or practice following a concussion or after being removed from an interscholastic contest due to a possible head injury or concussion and not cleared to return to that same contest. You should also inform your child’s coach if you think that your child may have a concussion.
