Definition of Listening. There are four basic skills in English, one of them is listening. Listening plays an important role in developing language skills for all age start from kindergarten to students of college. It is very important to make the students understand about what the speaker say, and what the speaker means, because listening as a basic skill of the student to have communication and catch out English conversation. This is suitable to the definition which described by Nation and Xxxxxx (2009, p. 37) state that listening can determine the early stages of language development in a person’s first language. Heglesen (2003, p. 24) states that listening is an active, purposeful process of making sense of what we hear. Listening is a skill which is different from and more than hearing. Hearing does not need prior knowledge and active listening. Meanwhile, listening needs prior knowledge and active listening in the listening process. Listening is considering very important to make communication with others. According to Xxxxxx (2003) as cited in Ausra, (2012) on her English journal that more than forty percent of our daily communication is used on listening, thirty-five percent on speaking, about sixteen percent in reading, and only nine percent on writing. Yet listening still one of the least understood processes in language learning eventhough the recognition of critical role it present both in communication and in language acquisition. According to Xxxxx (1997), cited in Xxxxxxxxx, (2016, p. 124) listening is a process of receiving what the speaker says, making and showing meaning, negotiating meaning with the speaker and answering, and creating meaning by audience, creativity, empathy. Listening can also helps the students to mastery vocabulary, develop their language proficiency, and improve their language usage. In listening the students have to take most of their time to understandthe lecture’s or teacher’s say, for example when the lecture or teacher giving the material of English in the classroom, listening ability presents a significant role in the development of other language skills. Thus, listening is the process of receiving sound that comes from what the speaker says directly or through audio cassette or watched VCD in English, and also identify and understand the dialogue or monologue directly or through audio cassette or watched VCD in English.

  • Definition of Layoff A layoff shall be defined as a reduction in the work force or a reduction in the regular hours of work as defined in this Agreement.

  • Operation of Lift 3.1 The mode of operation of the passenger/materials lift shall be at the discretion of Management, but there shall be landings at intervals of not more than four (4) storey levels. Starting times of various Trades may be staggered by agreement to avoid lift congestion at starting and finishing times. 3.5 Should a crane or cranes on a building not be able to operate (eg., because of wind or mechanical failure), employees will continue to work to a maximum of four (4) levels above the range of the lift, provided that the appropriate emergency service is satisfied that it is capable of being able to provide first aid attendance, and removal if necessary, to/of any employee on any section of the project without the use of the crane/s.
