Expectation Maximization. In the case of the Expectation Maximization algorithm, the variables (the users) are represented as probability density functions, rather than as single points. One common case is working with Gaussian Mixture Models, in which the probability density functions are represented as a mixture of multivariate normal densities. The Gaussian mixture distribution is a multivariate distribution that consists of a mixture of one or more multivariate Gaussian components. The Expectation Maximization Algorithm (EM) is used to fit the data, assigning posterior probabilities to each probability density with respect to each observation (group belonging). The posterior probability is max- imized and the local optimum solution represents the cluster belongings (probability-wise).
