ICF. Intracortical facilitation is tested using the same paradigm as SICI but with longer ISIs, typically (12-15 ms) (Xxxxxxx et al., 1993). Facilitation has been shown to not associate with facilitation of the H-reflex suggesting that this phenomenon occurs at the level of the cortex (Xxxxxxxxxx et al., 2008). ICF is believed to be reflecting net prevailing excitability, with weaker inhibition arising from the end of the GABAa mediated IPSP which has a latency of approximately 10-25 ms, (Xxxx and Xxxxxxx, 1996). This is supported by the decreasing of ICF by NMDA receptor antagonists, (Xxxxxxx et al., 1998a). In contrast to SICI, investigations of the mechanisms in ICF are less conclusive with epidural recordings demonstrating that there is no significant change in corticospinal activity (amplitude of descending waves) in the presence of a significant MEP facilitation(Xx Xxxxxxx and Xxxxxxx, 2013). This raises the question of whether SICI and ICF are mediated by independent circuits.
