A leave for the care of a family member is defined as an unpaid leave of absence, which at the time it is requested is to be used by the employee to care for a spouse, son, daughter, or parent of the employee if the spouse, son, daughter, or parent has a serious health condition.

Accrued paid vacation, floating holidays, or sick time may be substituted for unpaid leave for the care of a family member.
