Obtaining Feedback for Non-English Speaker. The process of feedback from non-English speakers is well established with other Applied Language Solutions customers and is a key element of the continuous professional development (CPD) of our interpreters. It also allows for swift remedial action to be taken where a problem is identified and also allows us to see where real excellence is being delivered. This process is used in conjunction with our robust feedback process from collaborative partner staff members, which is described in our earlier submissions. Together, this, feedback from all customer organisations will be collected and continuously written against an interpreter’s profile. This will have a direct bearing on the frequency and sector(s) to which interpreters are assigned, corrective CPD work undertaken, and/or suspension or removal from service. Obtaining feedback from non-English speakers in a “non-legal” setting (NHS, local government etc) is relatively straightforward as they have nothing to gain from disrupting the situation in which they find themselves. It is a very different scenario when a detained person or indeed a convicted prisoner is asked to provide feedback on interpretation as they may see an opportunity to delay or disrupt the legal process. We would strongly recommend that feedback on interpreters is gathered in this way only when a standard complaints procedure is being following, or where it is clear that a breakdown in communication due to interpreter failure has been identified by the staff member. However, there are many instances where a victim or witness requires interpretation and they should be allowed easy access to providing feedback on the quality of the linguist. To this end, we provide a feedback form in the most-requested languages which has multiple choice responses and can therefore be read and understood by anyone within Applied Language Solutions or each collaborative partner. This form is available in paper copy or on-line. The non-English speaker can therefore complete the form straight after the interpretation online or by paper, or later by filling in the paper copy and sending it to our freepost address. Alternatively Applied Language Solutions can collect these at review meetings. Either way, there is no intervention, influence or bias from the interpreter, so the results are usually extremely robust and valid.
