Common use of Overtime Approval Clause in Contracts

Overtime Approval. When overtime work is required within a department, the employee's supervisor will inform the employee whether he/she can be compensated in cash or in compensation time off for overtime to be worked. The employee may refuse the overtime, in which case the supervisor will proceed to request the overtime from other qualified employees within the department. In the event that the supervisor finds no one qualified to perform the needed work, he/she may require that an employee perform the work, when work absolutely cannot be put off. In all cases, the supervisor will make an honest attempt to satisfy the department needs and those of the employee in authorizing and compensating overtime. 4.8.1 Normally, overtime will be approved by the employee's supervisor prior to the work being performed. When this is operationally impossible, blanket approvals to work overtime will be made by Assistant Superintendents. This blanket approval will specify situations in which overtime will be allowed for employees without prior supervisory approval. The Payroll Office will receive a copy of such blanket approvals.
