PA/CIS. Automated Train Messages An automated message is one that is launched to the devices automatically, as a result of train information received via ATS-A. In other words, automated messages are those that have been triggered by events (such as a train crossing a track-mounted detection device). Automated messages can be audio-only, visual-only, or audio and visual. For example: A message stating “The Southbound #2 train will arrive at the station in approximately 10 minutes” might be visual-only. A message stating “Please stand back from the tracks as the train enters the station” might be audio-only. An announcement that a train is about to enter the station might be audio as well as visual. Message distribution to the station speakers and display signs is accomplished by message processing and distribution equipment installed in each station's communication equipment room.

PA/CIS. Manual Messages The PA and CIS subsystems allow centrally located NYCT operators and other designated personnel to define, edit, store and launch announcements for scheduled playback at targeted stations. Manual messages are those that have been created and scheduled by NYCT employees for playback at selected stations. Like automated messages, manual messages can be audio-only, visual-only, or audio and visual. For example: A message stating that “The 30th Street exit is temporarily closed for maintenance purposes” might be visual-only. A message stating “For your safety, please stand back from the platform edge” might be audio-only. A message stating “The Northbound #4 Express train will be arriving on the Local track shortly” might be audio as well as visual. Manual messages can be launched a single time or may be repeated, on a schedule, over a period of time. (If the message might be re-used in the same or similar format at a future time, it can be saved to the message library.) Messages are distributed to station speakers and display signs via the message processing and distribution equipment installed in each station's communication equipment room.
